Painting Sailboat Rudder

painting sailboat rudder

The daggerboard and rudder are some sort of composite wood construction. they were pretty beat up, but i had some airline mechanic students fix it (carbon fiber and fiberglass!). they did a great job. my question is paint. it looks like both had been painted (white) a long time ago. my wife wants to repaint them. any suggestions as to the type. The rudder has remnants of paint but none on the prop. do you guys prime and paint your running gear. my boat will sometime sit a month between uses so i feel i should paint the prop and rudder or else it foul with barnacles. will it also affect speed and rpm on a single diesel if the prop has paint. i will be using an ablative paint here in nc.. While we knew the previous paint was a two-part product, that’s not always obvious, but it’s an important point. two-pack paints can’t be applied over a single-part paint. if you’re in doubt as to what’s already on your boat there’s a simple test – use a cloth to apply some thinners/reducer for two-part coatings to a test area..

As the rudders rotate up and down the aluminum casting scrapes the paint away in a semi-circle. also, the lower forward edge where the sand kicks up the rudders is bare. i don't know that there is anything you can do to prevent either..
