Sailboat Boom Topping Lift

sailboat boom topping lift

The topping lift (more rarely known as an uphaul) is a line which applies upward force on a boom on a sailboat.. part of the running rigging, topping lifts are primarily used to hold a boom up when the sail is lowered. this line would run from near the free end of the boom(s) forward to the top of the mast. the line may be run over a block at the top of the mast and down to the deck to allow. To use the topping lift, release the line from the fairlead cleat, haul or ease the line to adjust the boom to the desired height, and recleat the line. leave plenty of slack in it when under sail so that it doesn’t interfere with sail shape, particularly when trimming a boom vang.. My last boat was a 25 ft cape dory rigged with a topping lift. the best function this set up had over a rigid vang was to raise the entire boom high up out of the ****pit,(raising the gooseneck up the boom while leveling the boom with the topping life)so we could more comfortably entertain guests while at anchor or dockside without hitting our heads on the boom..

sailboat boom topping lift It flakes the sail nicely. the topping lift needs to be adjusted so that it is tight when the sail is lowered and when hoisting the main it brings the boom up a couple inches, to slacken the topping lift and take strain off the mono lines laced through the sail, allowing the sail to shape properly.. 23 topping lift paul, i have a 23 but with a z-spar mast/boom. on my boat, the toping lift is 1 of the 3 lines internal to the boom. the other 2 are the outhaul and reef line. my current configuration is reef line on the starboard side, outhaul center and topping lift port. there should be 3 sleeves on the end cap of your boom..
